#WhatIMake Conference: Call for Speakers

#WhatIMake: the conference

where ideas meet practice

October 17, 2015

Hosted by Miranda’s Hearth

at Groundworks in New Bedford, MA

Miranda’s Hearth is seeking presenters for the #WhatIMake Conference on October 17, 2015 at Groundworks in New Bedford, MA.  The conference will benefit local artisans, makers,  and small and independent business owners by providing a venue for a collaborative creative community.

The conference will be broken down into two sections: a morning session of talks and an afternoon session of interactive workshops.  Each selected presenter will give a concise, 10 minute talk about what they make followed by a 45 minute afternoon workshop that connects their talk to real-life experience.  We are looking for makers in the broadest sense including, but not limited to, those who practice programming, robotics, gardening, cartooning, art, physics, cooking, biology, mapping, canning, writing, web design, framing, counseling, and music. Since presenters will lead a hands-on workshop in the afternoon, we are especially seeking speakers who are skilled at teaching.

Selected presenters will be awarded a $50 honorarium plus up to $30 to cover supplies for workshops. They will also be asked to participate in at least two practice sessions before the event.

If interested, please submit the following to mirandashearth@gmail.com by August 1:

  •         A paragraph describing the subject of your talk
  •         A paragraph describing the structure of your workshop, including your past teaching experiences.
  •         A short bio and a resume

The mission of Miranda’s Hearth is to build community through creativity that is approachable, affordable, and accessible. Currently, the organization hosts Dinner, Art, and Music nights every Second Sunday that begin with a feature presentation and end in open music jams and art-making sessions. Our long-term goal is to become the first community art hotel, where everything from the food to the furniture is made by members of the community.  Starting June 13, 2015, we will start BIG Art, Tiny House, a public art project where we will build our first hotel room.
