Cristina’s Boxes

“This piece is called “The Face We Choose to Miss” from the first line of an Emily Dickinson poem.  Women, despite the crucial domestic work they did (and do) (be they stay-at-homes, domestic workers, or slaves) are often forgotten in historical narratives.  This work shows random women – they may have been domestic workers, housewives, working women who also took care of their home (we don’t know – they are anonymous) with some elements of domesticity – the wooden spoon, the fabric, the key (to the house?), and the wallpaper. They are also boxed in by this context.  Behind the wooden spoons are drawings of old gynecological tools, for most women had no choice but to become mothers before the advent of birth control.”
