BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 5: Sheathing

In case you didn’t know, plywood is really heavy.

Over the fourth of July weekend, I was convinced to rest on Friday and go to the beach on Saturday because supposedly having days off is good for you.  But we were back at it on Sunday!  We had our largest crew of volunteers yet and thanks to their efforts, we got Zip Board sheathing up around over 2/3’s of the house.

We started on the back wall and had to re-square the house as we went, which lead to some interesting moments with two people holding up a full sheet of plywood (again, really heavy), one measuring from the top, one standing on the side of the house with a level, and one standing back with a nail gun.  It was a good day to have a lot of volunteers.

In order to get the sheathing up, we also spent some time finishing the strapping so that it went most of the way around the house and screwing in the hurricane bolts over the threaded rods.  This house is definitely not falling to pieces.  (Knock on wood).

This was probably the hottest day that we’ve been out working and that along with lugging around plywood meant that by 4:30 everyone was done. We packed up with plans to finish sheathing next Saturday while with putting in the ceiling framing and the floor of the loft.  On Sunday, we’ll be working on the roof with help from Andy, who came out to cut patterns for the roof this weekend.  Pretty soon, it’s going to start to look like a real house!
