How to Buy Gifts for a Tiny House Dweller

aubergine-fallIn my family, we always ask each other for gift suggestions, but this year there’s been an extra emphasis. It’s my first holiday season with Aubergine and all my family and friends are wondering, “What on earth do we get her?”

So I created a little cheat sheet about what kinds of gifts to get for a tiny house dweller:

  1. Tickets to an Event: I’m an artist and I love supporting the arts. You know what’s even better than going to see a concert/museum/play? Going to see it with someone you care about. This was my top suggestion to my family.  As someone whose home life has gotten much smaller, I spend a lot more time outside of it.  But that can add up!
  2. Self-Care/Self-Indulgences: After building a tiny house, there is one thing I will always need: massages. And hot tub soaks.
  3. Trips: Plan a get-away weekend, a beach day, what-have-you, and take me with you.
  4. Utilitarian Things: This ones a little tricky, because I don’t really need that crock-pot you think I need, but there are some small things that would be really useful. I love getting gifts that I use every day –Electric kettle, anyone? How about a seltzer machine?– because then I get to think of the person who gave it to me all the time.
  5. Art Supplies: This won’t be relevant to all tiny housers, but as an artist the one part of my life where I haven’t slimmed down is in my professional art supplies. I will always need more oil paint, brushes, and canvas. And who knows, maybe next year that means you’ll get a painting!

Once I made this list, I realized that these are the kinds of gifts I’ve always really enjoyed receiving and giving, even before the tiny phase of my life. These are the types of gifts that really require thought, planning, and care. They are also gifts that involve the giver, and as an extrovert out in the woods, I need all the social interaction I can get!
