BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 8: Sheathing the Roof

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 8: Sheathing the Roof

Last weekend, the project finally turned into a grind (thus the short blog post).  Showing up on Saturday was not easy, but I’m glad we did because the first time you say “Oh, I guess I can just take it easy today” quickly becomes the first of many. So, despite rain on Saturday, humidity andContinue Reading

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 7: Dormer Walls

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 7: Dormer Walls

This weekend we built the dormer walls and put on most of the rafters. On Saturday it was cold and rainy. On Sunday it was incredibly hot. The volunteers who came to help in both conditions went above and beyond. There was a lot a hammering and ladder moving. It’s time for a nap.

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 6: Raising the Roof

One month in and BIG Art; Tiny House is finally start to look more like a house than a box!  It’s amazing what one triangle on top can do.  Geometry, my friends, who would have thought? We got two full work days in this weekend despite it being hotter than we’ve had to deal withContinue Reading

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 5: Sheathing

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 5: Sheathing

In case you didn’t know, plywood is really heavy. Over the fourth of July weekend, I was convinced to rest on Friday and go to the beach on Saturday because supposedly having days off is good for you.  But we were back at it on Sunday!  We had our largest crew of volunteers yet andContinue Reading

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 4: Finishing the Walls

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 4: Finishing the Walls

It’s taken five days of labor, but the walls of BIG Art; Tiny House are officially raised and man does it feel good! The past month has been a roller coaster of excitement, exhaustion, and lots of saw dust.  Last week, as I sat at my desk at The Umbrella and looked out the window atContinue Reading

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 3: The First Two Walls

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 3: The First Two Walls

You wouldn’t guess it from the sunshine streaming mockingly through my window at this moment, but heavy downpours for most of the morning on Sunday kept us from going out to the build site.  I suppose it was just Mother Nature’s way of ensuring that I rested, because apparently it takes a thunderstorm to make meContinue Reading

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 2: Trailer Insulation and Subfloor

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 2: Trailer Insulation and Subfloor

Just like that, we’ve blasted through the first weekend of building for BIG Art; Tiny House! Somehow, we managed to squeeze in between a rainstorm Friday night and showers all day on Monday for two beautiful building days. Saturday morning started off with an in depth Home Depot run to get what in my mindContinue Reading

Art as Therapy

A review of Art as Therapy by Alain de Botton and John Armstrong written by Hearth Member, Amy Beth Harrison How therapeutic is looking at art for you? The point of Art as Therapy by Alain de Botton and John Armstrong is that the experience could be so much better.  I wouldn’t be a visual artistContinue Reading

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 1 – The Week Before

BIG Art; Tiny House Post No. 1 – The Week Before

At 1:00 in the morning on Thursday, June 4, 2015, I saw the trailer of my tiny house for the first time.  Since I got a picture at 5:00 from Nat Bearg, the Hearth Member who drove down to Chambersburg, PA to pick it up, I had been jumping around and grinning at everyone.  ButContinue Reading
