Making Magic

written by Hearth Member, Jaclyn Wood

The Harry Potter Hearth Dinner is approaching. Do you have your costumes ready? It’s easy to put together a house uniform, but unfortunately there is no wand shop in Harvard Square. That’s no problem for a community of makers. To make this most important magical tool all you need is a chopstick, hot glue, some paint, and a little magic 😉

The wider end of the chopstick will become the handle of your wand. Think about how you want to build on it with hot glue. You can look at specific character’s wands for inspiration. As you apply the glue you’ll want to keep rotating the chopstick until it starts hardening to get the most even application. Once the glue is cooled but not hard you can mold it with your fingers.

I found wax paper helpful to smooth and shape it. Mistakes can be sanded or cut off. When you are satisfied with the shape add paint to make it all look like wood. Voila! You just transformed a chopstick into your own personal wand so you can check that off your Hogwarts supply list. Join us this Sunday for our Harry Potter Hearth Dinner and show us the wands you make!
